Surin: The Police Chief has confirmed that the explosion at the ammunition depot in Surin was not an act of sabotage, with security measures in place around the clock.

According to Thai News Agency, the Commissioner General of Police clarified that the explosion at the Border Patrol Police depot in Surin province was not due to sabotage. Security in the area is maintained consistently, with CCTV surveillance and personnel on duty 24 hours a day. The Commissioner noted that if there were structural issues, similar incidents would have occurred in the past 39 years, indicating that the explosion is not linked to any such problems. Although the exact cause remains under investigation, there is no rush to conclude it was due to heat.

The National Police Chief, Police General Kittiratt Phanphet, dismissed the possibility of sabotage in the incident at the Border Patrol Police (BPP) 21 weapons depot. He suggested that old, deteriorated weapons combined with hot weather might have led to the explosion, but emphasized the need for a detailed forensic analysis to confirm this theory.

The explosion occurred at the BPP 21 weapons depot in Cheniang Subdistrict, Mueang District, Surin Province, affecting two of the seven storage facilities that house ammunition and RPG rocket launchers. The Commissioner General of Police reiterated the area's robust security measures, including CCTV cameras, security personnel, and a monitored perimeter fence active around the clock.

Initial investigations suggest that the explosion may have resulted from an internal device or ignition source, possibly exacerbated by the hot weather and deterioration of the stored weapons. Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) officers and forensic teams have been deployed to the site, pending official forensic results.

The Police Chief emphasized that if structural issues were to blame, similar incidents would have occurred previously. He believes the incident is more likely related to technical issues with military equipment and urged the public not to misconstrue it as an act of sabotage.

There were no fatalities reported, only minor injuries, and the situation is fully under control. The Police Chief assured that a detailed investigation will follow the forensic process. When questioned about drawing conclusions regarding heat as a cause, he stated that the investigation relies on evidence currently being examined.
