Flood Barriers Collapse in Ang Thong Province Causing Chaotic Evacuations

Ang thong: Early this morning, a water barrier in Village No. 5, Phong Pheng Subdistrict, Pa Mok District, Ang Thong Province, was unable to withstand the water pressure and collapsed in several places, causing chaotic evacuations. The collapse resulted from the Chao Phraya Dam increasing water discharge downstream, which led to water rapidly overflowing into over 500 homes. Villagers were forced to quickly move their belongings onto the roads as water levels rose swiftly.

According to Thai News Agency, soldiers from the Lop Buri Provincial Artillery Battalion, who were assisting villagers with flood prevention efforts, faced strong currents to rescue two elderly women from their homes where the flood barrier had given way. The situation was dire as residents scrambled to safety amidst the floodwaters.

The latest update from the Chao Phraya Dam in Chainat Province indicates that the water level at the Chaloem Maharat Station, Office of the 12th Royal Irrigation Department in front of Ang Thong Provincial Hall, stands at 9.23 meters/mL, which is 8.50 meters above the critical level. This exacerbates the threat of further flooding in the region.
