Hat yai: Flooding in the southern provinces has escalated into a crisis following continuous heavy rainfall since November 20, 2015. The rising water levels have led to evacuation orders, yet many residents remain stranded, lacking essential supplies.
According to Thai News Agency, despite the establishment of a government water management center, efforts to solve the crisis and provide assistance are insufficient. Many residents in flood-prone areas are facing severe shortages of food, drinking water, and essential goods. Communication is limited to mobile phones, which are being used to report the situation and call for help. With water and electricity cut off, urgent aid is required to prevent further isolation.
Hat Yai Municipality has predicted that water levels will peak tonight, enforcing a 100% evacuation order. However, the absence of a centralized information center leaves residents uncertain about evacuation routes and destinations. Deputy spokesperson for the Prachachon Party, Ms. Phakamon Nunan, highlighted the need for a centralized information center to manage evacuations and provide critical information to the public.
The People’s Party is urging the government to implement urgent measures, including establishing an information center, communicating evacuation points and routes, and providing targeted assistance to vulnerable groups such as children, the disabled, and the elderly. They also call for the mobilization of necessary equipment for evacuations and the delivery of essential supplies to affected areas.
The establishment of a frontline water management center to continuously report on water levels is also recommended to keep local authorities and the public informed. The People’s Party emphasizes the need for the government to expedite these measures to ensure comprehensive evacuation and assistance for all citizens affected by the flooding.
