Bangkok: The government has ordered close monitoring of the Nipah virus and emphasized strict screening measures.
According to Thai News Agency, the government has responded to the recent increase in Nipah virus cases reported in India by reinforcing surveillance protocols and affirming that no cases have been detected in Thailand. The public is advised to remain calm and rely on official updates.
Ms. Airin Phairat, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, disclosed that authorities are closely observing the situation in India, where five cases have been confirmed. Indian officials have implemented control measures, including quarantining and tracing over 180 contacts in West Bengal. In Thailand, surveillance measures are in place at international checkpoints. Travelers exhibiting high fever or symptoms linked to Nipah virus will undergo further screening.
The Department of Medical Sciences, via the Public Health Research Institute, is prepared to diagnose the Nipah virus using the Real-time RT-PCR method, known for its precision. This testing encompasses various sample types, with results available within 8 hours.
Ms. Airin emphasized the absence of a cure or vaccine for the Nipah virus, highlighting preventive measures such as avoiding contact with potential carriers and thorough hygiene practices. Despite no human cases in Thailand, the virus remains a classified dangerous communicable disease necessitating vigilant monitoring and immediate reporting of any suspected cases.
