Government Faces Scrutiny Over Appointment of New Permanent Secretary of Energy

Bangkok: The government is under scrutiny for its recent appointment of Mr. Chantanont Wannakhechorn as the new Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, with concerns raised about whether political loyalty was prioritized over expertise in energy policy management.

According to Thai News Agency, the Democrat Party spokesperson, Mr. Pongsakorn Kwanmuang, criticized the Cabinet's decision, highlighting that Mr. Wannakhechorn's background in the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives lacks direct experience in the energy sector. This has raised questions about the selection process, suggesting that "political closeness" may have outweighed the need for specialized knowledge in a ministry critical to the country's economic future.

Despite Mr. Wannakhechorn's expertise in agriculture, the Ministry of Energy handles sensitive issues tied to national security, such as oil, natural gas, and electricity infrastructure. Therefore, a deep understanding of these areas is crucial for providing accurate recommendations to political leaders, especially with five key national agendas on the horizon. These include developing a new Power Development Plan, liberalizing electricity market regulations, preparing energy infrastructure for AI and data center growth, ensuring long-term LNG security, and promoting a sustainable transition to clean energy.

Mr. Pongsakorn noted that the trend of appointing civil servants from other ministries to the Ministry of Energy serves as a warning for current civil servants to reevaluate their roles in protecting public interests. He emphasized the need for the Prime Minister and the Minister of Energy to clarify the criteria for such appointments to address public concerns. The public is particularly focused on achieving tangible results and sincerity in tackling four critical issues: establishing a fair oil pricing structure, ensuring transparency in imported natural gas price calculations, driving renewable energy investments, and creating a fair electricity purchase system to ensure economic justice.
