Baku:Rangsit Prayursak Canal The government has mandated rigorous testing for heavy metals and contaminants following the discovery of dark, murky water with white foam in the Rangsit Prayursak Canal. This action is part of an urgent response to improve water quality and address environmental impacts resulting from recent flooding.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, emphasized the government's commitment to resolving water quality issues. Mr. Suchart Chomklin, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, directed the Pollution Control Department to monitor the water quality closely and collaborate with relevant agencies to mitigate impacts on public health and the environment promptly.
The Pollution Control Department, through its Environmental and Pollution Control Office Region 6, conducted initial water quality measurements at several locations, including the Chulalongkorn sluice gate and Suk Kasem community sluice gate. The findings indicated the presence of dark water, white foam, and a foul odor, with no dead aquatic life observed. Dissolved oxygen levels were low, suggesting oxygen depletion which could affect aquatic life.
The pollution is suspected to be linked to recent floodwater discharge that may have introduced organic matter and detergents into the canal. Additionally, the use of large pumps to drain water might have contributed to the formation of foam. Further investigation is necessary to determine the exact pollution source.
Today, the Pollution Control and Environmental Office Region 6 plans to collect additional water samples for detailed laboratory analysis, which will include testing for heavy metals and volatile organic compounds. This will help assess the risk and identify the problem's root cause.
Officials are conducting preliminary water quality tests, distributing bio-fermented water to alleviate wastewater issues, and providing drinking water to affected residents. The government urges the public to avoid contact with the contaminated water and refrain from dumping waste into the canals.
Ms. Lalida reiterated the government's dedication to identifying the pollution source and implementing solutions while monitoring the health of affected residents. Citizens can report pollution incidents or seek advice from the Pollution Control and Environmental Office Region 6 or the Pollution Control Department hotline.
