Governor of Sports Authority of Thailand Addresses 2025 SEA Games Concerns

Bangkok: The Governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) has clarified the drama surrounding the 2025 SEA Games opening and closing ceremonies, stating they will not be extravagant but rather “elegant.”

According to Thai News Agency, the Governor has also addressed the controversy by setting up a “war room” that convenes every evening to investigate deficiencies across all sports. The ceremonies will be budgeted efficiently, focusing on elegance rather than grandeur, and there is confidence that Thailand will host the event as successfully as any other nation.

Dr. Kongsak Yodmanee, Governor of the SAT, spoke on the controversy surrounding the 33rd SEA Games, noting that all 50 sports have been assigned to respective sports associations for technical responsibility. However, the SAT continues to provide oversight and assistance to prevent errors. He cited an incident with the football match sound system, which malfunctioned despite repeated practice sessions, and extended apologies to those affected.

The SAT has established a “war room” to closely examine shortcomings in all sports, emphasizing strict management by all associations. The SAT will provide technical support to ensure smooth operations.

The petanque field’s preparation was delayed due to relocation from Songkhla Province, but the project is now fully underway and ready for the competition as planned.

Regarding budget and ceremonies, the SAT Governor confirmed efficient use of funds, ensuring standards are upheld. The emphasis will be on elegance rather than grandeur, and he remains confident in Thailand’s hosting capabilities.

Addressing issues of cleanliness, lighting, and signage, the SAT Governor acknowledged these flaws, particularly in restrooms and high-traffic areas. Additional cleaning staff were ordered, lighting improvements initiated, and plant pot signs removed following criticism.

It is estimated that 50 sports can proceed at 90% efficiency without major issues, with only minor details requiring resolution.

Regarding allegations of excessive spending on bathroom signs, Dr. Kongsak clarified that the information was distorted. Legal action is being pursued, and if disciplinary action is warranted, the individual responsible could face termination.

The SAT Governor concluded by urging against premature criticism of the opening ceremony, asserting that SEA Games standards are competitive globally and expressing confidence that the public will not be disappointed. He emphasized maintaining high standards and adapting public relations to contemporary times while ensuring top-tier competition standards.
