Hand-woven doormats, a side job to increase income

Housewives making hand-woven doormats use the 10,000 baht they received from the government to buy equipment to supplement their career and increase their pre-order sales. They are preparing to further develop the frame for weaving hand-woven doormats as a secondary career to increase their income.

Mrs. Auyaphorn Onmak, age 48, a resident of Khum Thanyawat 2, Maha Sarakham Municipality, received training in the occupation of weaving hand-woven doormats from scraps of cloth. She formed a group of 10 people and produced hand-woven doormats. Each day, she can make about 20 mats, taking about 30 minutes per mat. The cost per mat is about 5 baht. She sells them wholesale at 15 baht and retails at 20 baht. Her daily income is about 200 baht, mostly from pre-orders.

Hand-woven doormats are stronger and more durable than machine-woven ones, are brightly colored, last a long time, and can be washed in a washing machine. Currently, there are only 3 members left who weave the cloth together because the fabric has bec
ome more expensive and is harder to find. If they have it, they sell it for 18 baht per kilogram. They can only make 2 doormats, which makes the cost very high. But if they sell it, they will get the same price. Therefore, there are only 3 members left in the group who use their free time to benefit themselves by working from their own homes.
