Heavy Rain Triggers Evacuation Warnings in Phuket Amid Flooding Concerns

Phuket:Heavy rainfall continues to affect Phuket, leading to significant flooding across various areas and prompting evacuation warnings for residents of Karon. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) issued a severe alert, warning of landslides and flash floods, which has led authorities to advise immediate evacuation.

According to Thai News Agency, the Bang Yai Canal area has been placed on high alert with a red flag warning, urging residents to secure their belongings and move them to higher ground. Continuous rainfall has exacerbated flooding in previously vulnerable locations, including Na Nai Road in Patong Subdistrict, Kathu District; Soi Khok Tonod in Karon Subdistrict; and roads Chao Fa Tawan Tok and Chao Fa Tawan East.

Deputy Governor of Phuket, Mr. Romdon Haji Awae, has assessed the flood risks at the command center in Karon Subdistrict, following the cell broadcast flood warning issued at 1217 PM. Residents in high-risk areas are urged to evacuate due to potential landslides. Authorities have requested evacuations from Soi Patak 2, Soi Patak 4, and Soi Patak 6 in Karon Subdistrict, directing residents to take essential documents and medication with them.

Karon Subdistrict Municipality has prepared shelters at Ban Kata School (Tritos Uppatham) and Wat Suwan Khiri Khet to accommodate evacuees. Additionally, Phuket City Municipality is closely monitoring the Bang Yai Canal, as water levels have risen significantly due to overnight rain.

Minister of Tourism and Sports, Mr. Surasak Panjaroenvorakul, has responded to the situation by instructing the Provincial Tourism and Sports Office, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), and the Tourist Police to ensure tourists' safety and coordinate with provincial authorities. Initial reports suggest that no tourists have been injured, although some may have been affected. Tourists were evacuated to safe areas and provided with first aid, and many have since returned to their accommodations.

While an economic impact assessment is pending, Phuket authorities anticipate minimal effects on tourism, with no expected changes in travel plans for tourists visiting the area.
