Bangkok: U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hexeth declared at the Shangri-La Dialogue security conference that the era of the United States shouldering the defense costs for wealthy nations has come to an end. Hexeth urged U.S. allies to take a more serious approach in sharing defense expenses.

According to Thai News Agency, Hexeth emphasized the crucial role of the Indo-Pacific region in U.S. security strategies, warning that the emergence of a dominant superpower in the area could lead to destabilization. In response, Hexeth announced plans for the U.S. military to restructure its forces to enhance flexibility and responsiveness, aiming to counter rapid military expansion and maintain regional power balance.

Hexeth further encouraged partner countries to increase their defense support, advocating for a genuine partnership where dependence or exploitation is absent. He acknowledged the contributions of allies such as South Korea, the Philippines, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand, while highlighting Japan's significant steps towards bolstering its defense capabilities.

The Shangri-La Dialogue, initiated in 2002, serves as a platform for high-ranking military officials, diplomats, and arms manufacturers worldwide to discuss regional security concerns. The participation of the U.S. Defense Secretary at this event comes amidst rising tensions between the U.S. and its allies. Recently, the U.S. commenced the withdrawal of 5,000 troops from Germany and has issued warnings of further reductions, driven by perceived detrimental attitudes and rhetoric from European allies, according to senior U.S. Defense officials.
