Bangkok: Contact lenses are now widely popular, both for correcting vision problems and for aesthetic purposes. But did you know that “illegal contact lenses” or contact lenses that do not meet standards are considered “illegal medical devices” that can cause serious harm, up to and including loss of vision?
According to Thai News Agency, contact lenses are considered medical devices under the Medical Devices Act of 2008, which requires approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before import or manufacture, as they are materials that come into direct contact with the “cornea,” the most important and delicate part of the eye.
The Academic President of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists of Thailand has warned of several potential risks associated with counterfeit contact lenses. If the lens does not fit the cornea properly, it may cause wounds or damage the cornea. Substandard contact lenses can also contain germs or contaminants, leading to corneal infections, pus-filled sores, spreading into the eyeball, and in severe cases, requiring removal of the eyeball to save life.
If contact lens users experience severe eye irritation or eye pain, blurred vision or red eyes, or white spots appearing on the cornea, which is a sign of a purulent infection, they should see an ophthalmologist immediately.
To keep your eyes safe, doctors advise buying contact lenses from a reliable source, checking the packaging for the correct Thai language label, medical device registration, and FDA license number. Maintain strict cleanliness by washing hands thoroughly with soap before putting in or taking out the lenses every time. Use lenses correctly by using only as needed and for the shortest possible time, discarding daily lenses daily, and changing the lens case every 2-3 months. It is important to not wear contact lenses while sleeping, swimming, or when you have eye inflammation.
Eyes are important organs, so choosing contact lenses is no joke. You should choose products that are “certainly” FDA-approved and strictly follow the recommendations for cleanliness to ensure both beauty and safety.
