Washington: Indonesia and the United States have entered into a significant trade agreement following the signing of multiple trade and investment deals worth over $7 billion by businesses from both nations. This development occurred just before the leaders of Indonesia and the United States formalized a broader trade deal.
According to Thai News Agency, the U.S.-ASEAN Business Council (USABC) announced that these agreements were finalized during a dinner hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in honor of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. President Subianto was in the United States to participate in the inaugural meeting of a peace committee established by U.S. President Donald Trump to work on implementing the Gaza peace plan.
Indonesian leaders are hopeful that their participation in the peace committee will encourage the United States to lower the tariffs on Indonesia, which were increased last year from 18 percent to 19 percent. The newly signed business agreements are components of a broader Indonesia-U.S. trade deal that President Subianto is set to sign with President Trump. These agreements aim to address Indonesia's trade surplus with the United States.
The agreements include significant purchases by Indonesian companies of U.S. agricultural products: 1 million tons of soybeans, 1.6 million tons of corn, and 93,000 tons of cotton. The deals also include a commitment to purchase 1 million tons of wheat this year, with an increase to 5 million tons by 2030. Additionally, the agreements encompass memoranda of understanding for cooperation in key minerals, an oil field cooperation agreement, and two joint investment agreements in the semiconductor sector.
Data from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that between 2015 and 2024, Indonesia's average annual imports from the United States included 2.3 million tons of soybeans, nearly 800,000 tons of wheat, 180,000 tons of cotton, and less than 100,000 tons of corn. On average, Indonesia has imported $3 billion worth of agricultural products from the United States each year, making it the 11th largest market for U.S. agricultural exports.
