Tokyo: The Japanese government is set to permit North Korean athletes to enter the country for the Asian Games scheduled in Aichi Prefecture. Government officials announced this decision on Tuesday, marking a significant exception to Japan's usual restrictions on North Korean nationals as part of ongoing sanctions.

According to Thai News Agency, Japan typically restricts the entry of North Korean citizens as part of its sanctions against the country. However, an exception will be made for the North Korean delegation participating in the international sporting event. A government official emphasized the importance of distinguishing between sanctions and the opportunity for athletes to participate in such events.

North Korea has already informed the Asian Games' organizing committee of its intention to send a delegation. Approximately 150 athletes from North Korea are expected to compete in various events during the games, which will take place from September 19 to October 4. This move marks the first time since the final round of the women's soccer qualifiers in Asia for the 2024 Paris Olympics that North Korean athletes have been allowed entry into Japan for a sporting event.
