Japanese Shochu Spirits Tasting Event Promotes Kyushu’s Distillers in Manhattan

New York:Nine distillers from Japan's Kyushu region showcased their "shochu" spirits in a tasting event held in Manhattan, New York, aimed at promoting their products in the U.S. market. The event, organized by the Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Association, took place at a local restaurant and attracted around 100 attendees, including members of the local dining industry.

According to Thai News Agency, the event highlighted the diversity of shochu, which remains relatively unknown in the United States. Akira Koga, a representative from the association, emphasized the variety of shochu beverages available, such as nonsugar and low-calorie options. He expressed a desire to popularize the term "honkaku (authentic) shochu."

The participating distillers included notable names such as Kirishima Shuzo Co. from Miyazaki Prefecture, Nishiyoshida Shuzo from Fukuoka Prefecture, and Takahashi Shuzo Co. from Kumamoto Prefecture. As part of their promotional efforts, November has been designated as shochu promotion month, during which special food items paired with shochu will be offered at dining establishments across New York.

One restaurant visitor noted the diverse ingredients used in shochu production and the importance of effectively conveying its unique flavors. Koga also mentioned plans to suggest innovative ways to enjoy shochu, such as mixing it with fruits or cucumbers.
