Khon Kaen Zoo Celebrates Baby Pygmy Hippopotamus Named ‘Waterfall Pig’ After Popular Vote

Khon kaen: Khon Kaen Zoo has officially named its baby pygmy hippopotamus "Moo Nam Tok" (Waterfall Pig), following a naming contest that drew over 10,000 participants. The announcement was made during celebrations of the zoo's 13th anniversary, led by Ms. Tipawadee Kittikun, the zoo's director.

According to Thai News Agency, the naming contest allowed tourists to vote from May 25th to June 25th, resulting in "Moo Nam Tok" receiving the most votes-7,948 out of 10,737. The other contenders were "Moo Yor" with 1,072 votes, "Moo Dueng" with 618 votes, "Moo Ping" with 576 votes, and "Moo Der" with 523 votes. The chosen name reflects the baby hippo's playful behavior and charm.

Ms. Kittikun highlighted the nationwide interest in the contest and noted that the winning name embodies the calf's demeanor. The individual whose vote led to the name's selection was awarded a special prize, including a two-year membership card for free zoo entries, a plush toy of "Moo Nam Tok," and other souvenirs.

The zoo invites visitors to meet "Waterfall Pig" and enjoy the pygmy hippo's playful antics while learning about wildlife conservation. Khon Kaen Zoo remains open daily from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
