Bangkok: The legend of "Rama 2 Road, the road of seven generations," comes to an end as the government inaugurates the M82 motorway for free use. Starting today, the trial opening of this new route aims to upgrade transportation infrastructure and facilitate travel to the South, marking a significant shift in the region's transit landscape.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Ploytalay Laksmisangchan, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced that the Department of Highways under the Ministry of Transport is expediting the M82 project. This initiative is part of the government's Quick Win policy, aligning with directives from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Mr. Pipat Ratchakitprakarn. The newly opened M82 section extends from Ekachai to Ban Phaeo, complementing the existing Bang Khun Thian - Ekachai section. The elevated motorway, stretching approximately 25 kilometers, will be available 24/7 without toll fees, providing a continuous alternative to Rama 2 Road and aiding southern travel.

Ms. Ploytalee noted that the trial opening, which begins at 10:00 AM, includes a 16.4-kilometer stretch from Ekachai to Ban Phaeo with four on-off ramps. While some toll plazas remain under construction, the trial period will be toll-free. The Department of Highways plans to finalize the highway and start toll collection in 2029. Due to ongoing construction, a speed limit of 80 km/h for cars and 65 km/h for trucks and buses is enforced, with restrictions on certain vehicles such as bicycles and motorcycles.

'The government prioritizes infrastructure development to boost the economy and enhance national competitiveness,' Ms. Ploytalay emphasized. She highlighted the M82 highway's role in easing congestion on Rama 2 Road, enhancing logistics, and fostering economic growth. The route will connect key areas, supporting tourism and trade, and offering tangible benefits to the economy and the public.
