Phisitphol Khattiya, an Automotive Mechanics Instructor at the Royal Thai Armed Forces Technical School, National Defence College.
According to Thai News Agency, underinflated tires are a primary cause of sudden tire leaks, punctures, and blowouts while driving. Lt. Khattiya explains that low tire pressure negatively affects the tire structure, causing the sidewall to collapse and internal components to separate. When a vehicle travels at high speeds, this distortion leads to heat and pressure buildup, eventually causing the tire to explode.
The consequences of a tire blowout are severe, resulting in a loss of vehicle control. A front tire blowout can cause a violent steering jerk, while a rear tire blowout, especially in vehicles with a high center of gravity, can lead to rear-end sliding and potential overturning.
Drivers are advised to monitor tire pressure through visual inspection, observing vehicle behavior, and utilizing the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) available in newer cars. Proper tire pressure varies by vehicle type, with typical passenger cars requiring 30-34 PSI and pickup trucks needing 32-40 PSI, depending on the load.
