Kuala lumpur: Malaysia has halted operations at a rare earth mine and two tin mines in the western state of Perak following an investigation into reports of discoloration in the waters of the Perak River. The action comes in response to public concerns over environmental impacts linked to mining activities in the region.
According to Thai News Agency, the Malaysian Natural Resources and Environment Minister, Johari Abdul Ghani, addressed parliament regarding the issue, confirming that authorities had initiated an investigation following complaints about parts of the Perak River turning blue. Initial findings suggest that waste from MCRE Resources Sdn Bhd’s rare earth mine resembles the coloration observed in the river. Furthermore, the mine has recorded radioactive contamination levels reaching 13 becquerels, significantly higher than the 1 becquerel limit established in initial environmental assessments. The investigation is now examining the chemicals used in the rare earth mining process to determine if they align with the information previously submitted to the authorities.
The MCRE Resources Sdn Bhd website reveals that the company is leading a rare earth mining initiative in Malaysia, utilizing technology sourced from a Chinese rare earth company. Earlier reports by Malaysian state media on November 1 highlighted Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s announcement regarding the development of a RM600 million high-magnet production facility in Pahang state. This initiative is intended to bolster Malaysia’s rare earth industry and enhance the nation’s efforts to establish a critical minerals supply chain.
The Malaysian government assesses that the country possesses approximately 16.1 million tonnes of rare earth resources but lacks the necessary technology for effective mining and processing. Malaysia is reportedly engaged in discussions with China concerning rare earth processing, and in October, Malaysian representatives signed a memorandum of understanding with US President Donald Trump on cooperation in the rare earth sector.
