Bangkok: "Ah Pae," a 62-year-old man, was taken into custody after evading authorities for 32 years following a murder case in Hong Kong. During his time on the run, he settled in Thailand and fathered three children.
According to Thai News Agency, the suspect, Mr. Mui Yiu Kieng, was apprehended by the Crime Suppression Division police at his residence in the Lam Phak Chi Subdistrict of Nong Chok District, Bangkok. He faces charges related to the murder of an official from Hong Kong's Special Administrative Region. The case dates back to 1989 when Hong Kong police discovered a body buried on a beach, leading to arrest warrants for four suspects. While most accomplices were caught, Mui Yew Keung, identified as the primary suspect who allegedly killed the victim with a shovel, managed to evade capture.
Authorities from Hong Kong reached out to the Central Investigation Bureau of the Royal Thai Police for assistance in locating and apprehending Mui Yew Keung, who was suspected of hiding in Thailand since 1994. Investigations revealed that a man operating a fish head porridge shop named "Ah Pae" in Lam Phak Chi was suspicious. This led to the issuance of a search warrant by the Min Buri Criminal Court, resulting in his arrest.
The suspect confessed to his identity as the fugitive and revealed he fled to Thailand in 1994 to evade justice. He initially managed a small factory in Samut Prakan province, later married a Thai woman, and had three children. Recently, he had opened a fish head porridge restaurant in Lam Phak Chi. Although he admitted to being the fugitive, he refused to discuss the murder charge. Initially, he was charged with illegally entering Thailand.
Reports suggest that the Hong Kong Commissioner of Police is scheduled to visit the Central Investigation Bureau headquarters to discuss collaboration on capturing transnational criminals between Thailand and Hong Kong. The meeting will also address the extradition process for Mr. Mui Yew Keung to Hong Kong for legal proceedings.
