Bangkok: Doctors have reported that a 37-year-old man suffered an allergic reaction to anesthesia following rhinoplasty and chin reshaping surgery at a renowned clinic in Bangkok, resulting in him going into shock and remaining unconscious. Despite the severe reaction, inspections by the Department of Health Service Support (DHSS) confirmed that the clinic is legally registered and compliant with healthcare standards.

According to Thai News Agency, the incident came to light when the victim's family reached out to the "Sai Mai Must Survive" Facebook page after the patient lost consciousness post-surgery on March 4th. The surgeries cost around 480,000 baht, and the family is seeking answers regarding the cause of the symptoms and demands the clinic take responsibility for the incurred expenses. Despite the patient's previous surgeries without allergic reactions, the family suspects a potential overdose of anesthesia might have induced the symptoms.

Medical professionals clarified that the patient exhibited signs of an allergic reaction during the surgery, including elevated carbon dioxide levels, excessive sweating, rapid pulse, and a high fever. These symptoms suggested malignant hyperthermia, a rare condition potentially triggered by anesthesia. Despite having undergone surgery with anesthesia before, the patient experienced this rare reaction, which can only be diagnosed through a complex muscle biopsy.

The surgical team acted promptly by suturing the nose, ceasing anesthesia, and transferring the patient to another hospital within an hour, ruling out the possibility of anesthesia overdose. The patient, diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, has shown improvement, with the ability to sit independently for short durations.

Dr. Apichai Pongpattananurak of Samitivej Hospital reported that the patient was initially intubated for severe acidosis and rhabdomyolysis. The joint conclusion of the medical teams from both the clinic and hospital was that malignant hyperthermia, an anesthesia-related allergic reaction, was the cause. Administering dantoline successfully reduced the patient's fever, confirming the diagnosis.

Dr. Arkhom Praditsuwann from the DHSS verified that the clinic meets all legal requirements and healthcare facility standards. Further investigations are underway to ensure all protocols were followed, and relevant findings will be submitted to agencies for appropriate legal actions.
