Bangkok: Mr. Maris Sengiamphong, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, announced the official visit of Mr. Thongsavanh Phomvihane, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), to Thailand from May 21-23. The visit aimed to strengthen the longstanding relationship between the two nations and enhance cooperation as an important foundation for future collaboration.

According to Thai News Agency, the discussions centered on increasing the intensity of suppressing transnational crimes, such as drug trafficking and illegal call center operations. Both ministers emphasized the importance of cooperation in line with Prime Minister Paethongtarn Shinawatra’s policy to prevent and combat drug-related activities along border routes. They also addressed the need for joint efforts to control or monitor unusual movements, following measures to cut off power, internet, and oil supply to counter smuggling activities.

The two leaders also discussed infrastructure and logistics, focusing on the construction of the 5th Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge, connecting Bueng Kan-Borikhamxay, and improving the transportation system to facilitate the transfer of goods to China through Laos. The possibility of using Savannakhet Airport as an alternative to constructing Mukdahan Airport was considered, given the current low passenger numbers. This temporary solution would allow for convenient travel between Bangkok and Savannakhet, with the potential for an international airport on the Thai side in the future.

The visit highlighted the mutual interests of Thailand and Laos, leading to clearer plans and effective implementation of cooperative frameworks. These efforts are expected to strengthen bilateral relations and will be reported to the Prime Ministers of both countries.
