MEA Unveils ‘Green Youth’ Initiative to Foster Global Citizenship

Bangkok: The Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) is advancing efforts to enhance urban quality of life by announcing the winners of the “Outstanding Educational Institution Standards in Energy and Environment” awards for 2025. The awards recognize 30 top educational institutions excelling in energy management, while promoting Thai youth as “Green Youth,” aiming to cultivate leaders who can address global warming and drive sustainability in Thai society.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Pisanu Tantithaworn, Deputy Governor of the MEA, presided over the ceremony and emphasized the organization’s commitment to fostering a low-carbon society in alignment with both national and international policies. The MEA sees educational institutions as pivotal in nurturing green youth, equipping students with essential knowledge and awareness about energy and environmental issues. This foundation is crucial for building a sustainable future society. The awards not only honor these institutions but also highlight the success of schools in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, and Samut Prakan-areas within MEA’s power distribution zones-in integrating energy and environmental conservation into their curricula. The initiative aims to benefit youth and their families, ultimately reducing energy costs and preserving the urban environment over time.

This year, six educational institutions achieved the highest standard (5 stars) and are recognized as role models: St. Joseph Convent School, Santa Cruz Convent School, St. Mary’s School, Phra Mae Sakon Songkhro School, Jindaphong School, and Bodindecha (Sing Singhaseni) 2 School.

Additionally, schools were awarded at various star levels to encourage ongoing development:

The event also included a special discussion titled “Path to a 5-Star Outstanding School Model in Energy and Environment,” where representatives from award-winning schools shared their experiences. Additionally, an “Empowering Green Youth Leadership” activity aimed to inspire student representatives to adopt energy leadership skills applicable within their schools.

“MEA believes that the power of these youth and educational institutions will be a key factor in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and propelling our metropolis towards becoming an environmentally sustainable smart city,” stated the MEA Deputy Governor.
