Mexico city: Mexican President Claudia Chenbaum has initiated legal action against a man who allegedly groped her during a public engagement in downtown Mexico City, as a video capturing the incident has gained widespread attention on social media.
According to Thai News Agency, the video, recorded by a bystander, depicts a middle-aged man approaching the president, placing his arm around her shoulders, and pretending to kiss her on the cheek. The man further attempted to grab her breasts before the president quickly intervened by grabbing his hand. Security personnel subsequently intervened to address the situation.
President Chenbaum described the incident as a crime and emphasized that she, along with other women, has encountered similar situations in the past. She raised concerns about the safety of women in Mexico, questioning how they could feel secure if such an incident could happen to the president. The man involved was reportedly heavily intoxicated and had harassed other women before being arrested.
The incident and its social media circulation have underscored the broader issue of insecurity faced by women in Mexico, a country grappling with discrimination and sexual violence. Despite the security breach, President Chenbaum stated she has no intention of altering her security arrangements, as she aims to remain accessible to the public.
