Bangkok: The National Security Council, led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Mr. Phumtham Vejchai, urgently convened to address the escalating situation on the Thai-Cambodian border. Acting in the capacity of Prime Minister, Mr. Phumtham called the meeting following recent clashes at the Ta Muen Thom temple, aiming to assess the situation and outline Thailand’s stance.

According to Thai News Agency, this meeting was prompted by the Royal Thai Army’s decision to close various checkpoints in the border area as a protective measure. These closures are part of a procedural escalation from step 1 to step 4, aimed at safeguarding the sovereignty and safety of the local populace. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has pledged to defend Thailand’s interests and sovereignty on the international stage, emphasizing a commitment to unity and cooperation in addressing the current tensions with Cambodia.

Prime Minister Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra, who canceled a scheduled mission in Chachoengsao Province, publicly condemned Cambodia’s actions, labeling them as a violation of international norms and human rights. Her statement highlighted the impact of the violence on both officials and civilians. Despite these challenges, Thailand has consistently pursued diplomatic avenues to prevent escalation, demonstrating patience and restraint.
