Bangkok: Mr. Nikorn Chamnong, a candidate for MP on the Bhumjaithai Party's party-list, has openly countered Mr. Somkid Chueakhong of the Pheu Thai Party, who accused Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul of "deceiving children" in the context of constitutional amendments. Mr. Nikorn described these allegations as an immature political attack, clarifying that the government has adhered to legal procedures, including budget approvals and coordination with the Election Commission in preparation for a referendum, following the Constitutional Court's directives. He asserted that these actions underscore the government's dedication to restoring power to the citizens.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Nikorn emphasized Bhumjaithai Party's unwavering support for constitutional amendments, while highlighting a significant stipulation: "Chapters 1 and 2 must not be altered" to maintain the stability of critical institutions and the state's structure. He argued that drafting a new constitution entirely is more economical and less convoluted than modifying individual articles, as the latter approach is both wasteful and complex. He noted that the entire process would necessitate three referendums to genuinely capture the public's will.
Moreover, Mr. Nikorn challenged the Pheu Thai Party to clarify their stance, particularly concerning their primary prime ministerial candidate, Somkid, and whether they have an approved plan or roadmap for constitutional amendments. He urged them to cease targeting others and instead present their own position transparently to the public before critiquing the efforts of others.
