OR – Vietjet Thai refuels SAF on pilot flight Suvarnabhumi – Danang

Bangkok, Mr. Disatat Panyarachun, Chief Executive Officer of PTT Oil and Retail Business Public Company Limited (OR), and Mr. Woranatee Laprabang, Chief Executive Officer of Vietjet Thailand, co-chaired the launch of the pilot flight of the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) service on the Bangkok-Danang route at Suvarnabhumi International Airport. The ceremony was honored by Ms. Uravadee Sripirom, Ambassador of Thailand to Hanoi, Vietnam; Mr. Vuthichai Kaewkrajang, Director of the Pollution and Environmental Analysis Center, Pollution Control Department, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment; Mr. Jakrapob Charassri, Director of the Environment Department, Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited (AOT); and ML Natthasit Diskul, President and CEO of Bangkok Aviation Fuel Services Public Company Limited (BAFS). Mr. Disatat said that OR provided sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) on Vietjet Thailand's inaugural flight from Bangkok to Da Nang to demonstrate its commitment to the environment and its tangibl e actions. SAF is produced from used cooking oil or UCO (Used Cooking Oil), which has similar chemical properties to jet fuel (Jet A-1) and can be blended with Jet A-1 to be used in aircraft without having to change or modify the engine. It has a lower carbon dioxide emission rate throughout its life cycle than conventional jet fuel. SAF for this inaugural flight was produced in collaboration with several organizations, including Neste, a leading global sustainable aviation fuel manufacturer in Finland, and PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited (PTTT), a member of the PTT Group, in collaboration with PETCO TRADING LABUAN COMPANY LIMITED (PTLCL) in Malaysia, as the supplier and importer, with Bangkok Aviation Fuel Services Public Company Limited (BAFS) as the aviation fuel refueling service provider. This significant collaboration is also in line with the OR SDG vision, especially in the 'G' or 'GREEN' dimension, which aims to create opportunities for a clean society. and aim to create a healthy environme nt, which is an important foundation for achieving the OR 2030 goals effectively, as well as supporting the change towards a clean and sustainable world. 'As for the progress of PTT Group's SAF project, it is preparing to sell SAF Co-processing in the first quarter of 2025. GC has a plan to commercially produce sustainable aviation fuel in January 2025 using Used Cooking Oil as raw material with a SAF production capacity of 6 million liters/year. The produced SAF complies with ASTM1665 standards,' said Mr. Disathat. Mr. Woraneti revealed that today's flight operating on sustainable aviation fuel is an important milestone for Vietjet Thailand and Vietjet Group in their commitment to sustainability, which reaffirms their commitment to reducing their environmental impact. This activity not only demonstrates the excellence of flight operations, but also aligns with Thailand's policy towards achieving zero carbon emissions by 2050. Through this creative and effective approach, we are part of the global goal set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to jointly create a sustainable future for the aviation industry. 'Operating flights using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is another core commitment under our ESG concept for environmental conservation. Today's special flight marks the first time that VietJet Thailand has used sustainable aviation fuel in its operations. We aim to use 1% SAF by 2026 and 5% by 2030, with a total SAF consumption of 20,000 tons by 2030, which will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 153,000 tons between 2025 and 2030,' said Mr. Woranet.
