Permanent Secretary Inaugurates Nationwide Cell Broadcast Disaster Warning Test

Bangkok: The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior has inaugurated a national-level test of the Cell Broadcast disaster warning system, marking a significant collaborative effort between the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, and mobile phone companies. The initiative is anticipated to minimize losses from severe natural disasters and establish an effective government communication system capable of reaching citizens across all regions. According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Arsit Sampanrat, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, led the nationwide test of the mobile phone-based disaster warning system. The event saw participation from Mr. Theerapat Khachamat, Director-General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, alongside representatives from relevant government agencies and network providers such as National Telecommunications Public Company Limited, True Corporation Public Company Limited, and Advanced I nfo Service Public Company Limited. The test was conducted at the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, with governors from all provinces, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, districts, and local administrative organizations joining via an online system. Mr. Arsit emphasized the increasing severity and complexity of current disasters compared to previous events, underscoring the importance of mechanisms like the cell broadcast warning systems for rapid public notification. The nationwide test managed by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation successfully sent alert signals to the public's mobile phones as a National Alert, aimed at warning about large-scale disasters. The alert was received simultaneously in all 76 provinces and Bangkok at the scheduled time of 2:00 PM. The test message assured the public in both Thai and English that it was not a real situation and no action was required. Mr. Arsit further reported that initial test results indicated that people in the affected a reas received the alert signal and test message efficiently within 10 seconds. Feedback from these areas will be surveyed and compiled into a report for the Cabinet. He highlighted that the Cell Broadcast system represents a new dimension in disaster warning, enabling quick, accurate, and location-specific alerts without causing widespread disruption. This technology, combined with adherence to safety guidelines, is key to minimizing losses and bolstering public confidence in the government's disaster warning system. Rapid and targeted communication reduces damage and creates a protective shield for society, fostering trust in the government's disaster management efforts.
