Arequipa: Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori visited and offered support to people stranded on a southern coastal highway after a landslide blocked the road for six days, leaving a large number of people trapped.
According to Thai News Agency, authorities have urgently opened air evacuation corridors using helicopters to rescue and evacuate victims from the area. They also anticipated that the highway would reopen within one to two days, after officials have cleared the area of debris and mud.
Heavy rainfall, coupled with landslides and rockfalls, has damaged several road structures in the Arequipa region, completely cutting off land transport routes connecting Arequipa, Tagna, and Ilo. This has created a travel crisis affecting thousands of people in the southern part of the country since Sunday, August 16th.
