Muang Phae is the name that appears on the stone inscription of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great, Pillar 1, Side 4. The word 'Phae' likely comes from the faith of the townspeople in the Phra That Cho Phrae or Cho Hae that was built. After the city was b uilt, they called their city Muang Phae, which later became the current Phrae city. Source: Thai News Agency
