Photo Leak Sparks Questions Over Connections Between Thai Officials and Scandal-Linked Suspect

Rome: Rangsiman Rome, a party-list MP and deputy leader of the Prachachon Party, has raised concerns after sharing leaked photos featuring Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanpraphat, and General Apirat Kongsompong alongside Ben Smith, a suspect involved in a significant money laundering scandal.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Rangsiman questioned the implications of this image, suggesting it might explain why no actions have been taken against Ben Smith, who remains without an arrest warrant. He posits that there could be a broader reluctance to pursue Smith, raising doubts about whether an Interpol Red Notice will be issued to track him internationally.

The MP also highlighted concerns over asset seizures, suggesting they might be superficial efforts intended to placate public concern, with the possibility of assets being returned to those involved in the scam. He questioned the government’s seriousness in addressing the issue and sought clarity on when victims might see restitution.

Furthermore, Mr. Rangsiman implied that the existence of these photos might be protecting officials like Lt. Col. Thammanat, who remains in his position despite connections to Ben Smith. He speculated that Thammanat may possess critical information, preventing Prime Minister Anutin from dismissing him.

The broader implications of the scandal were also highlighted, as Mr. Rangsiman expressed disbelief at the size and reach of scam networks in Thailand. He questioned whether government officials would take action against the illegal financial operations that have infiltrated the country.
