Phuket Authorities Enhance Flood Preparedness with Advanced Monitoring Systems

Phuket:Authorities are scrutinizing the drainage system in Phuket, emphasizing the Intelligent Operation Center's (IOC) role in 24-hour monitoring and immediate assistance for those affected by floods.

According to Thai News Agency, the government is overseeing flood preparedness plans for the Phuket Economic Zone and has instructed the Department of Public Works to consider adding floodgates in the area. Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, Ms. Ploytalay Laksmisangchan, conveyed that Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul has tasked Deputy Minister of Interior Worasit Liengprasit with overseeing weather forecasts and flood management in Phuket at the IOC. This center offers real-time monitoring and data integration from relevant agencies, including local administrative organizations. Key figures present included Phuket Governor Chotinrin Kerdsum, Deputy Governor Romdon Haji Awae, and Phuket City Mayor Supachok Laongphet.

The team assessed the readiness of the Bang Yai Canal Pumping Station and the Takua Pa Pumping Station, both managed by Phuket City Municipality. These stations are vital for flood control, draining stagnant water from urban areas and economic zones into the sea, thus preventing flooding. They handle high tides during heavy rainfall and ensure water from canals flows into the sea without seawater returning to the city.

Phuket Province and Phuket City Municipality have established a comprehensive plan to address potential flooding from heavy rainfall. This includes having equipment, machinery, and personnel ready, monitoring high-risk areas, and preparing to evacuate vulnerable groups, such as bedridden patients. Central government support includes mobilizing equipment and personnel, with contributions from the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Defense, such as the Royal Thai Navy's water-pushing vessels.

Ms. Ploytalay noted that Mr. Worasit Liengprasit has directed local administrative organizations to expedite surveying damage, following the Prime Minister's directive to streamline processes for citizens. The addition of floodgates in Phuket City is under consideration, with the Phuket Provincial Department of Public Works and Town Planning tasked with seeking central government support. The Ministry of Interior is prepared to liaise with the government to advance these efforts for the benefit of Phuket residents.
