Phuket: Worasit Liengprasit, Deputy Minister of Interior, has elaborated on the stringent measures being enforced against influential figures in Phuket. The Prime Minister has directed a comprehensive crackdown across all regions, with a particular focus on Phuket due to certain groups continuing to defy the law. Worasit expressed optimism for improvement and warned that any government officials involved would face serious consequences.
According to Thai News Agency, the Prime Minister has tasked three Deputy Ministers of Interior with speeding up the crackdown on influential figures, not only in Phuket but across all provinces, including Koh Phangan, Surat Thani, and Krabi. Mr. Worasit emphasized the diligence of the team in addressing the issue, noting that the problem extends beyond Phuket and affects various areas. He stressed the importance of preventing groups or individuals from abusing power to oppress others.
When questioned about the Prime Minister's concerns during his visit to Phuket and the apparent lack of progress, Mr. Worasit clarified that the Prime Minister's actions are part of an ongoing process. He acknowledged that some groups still act without fear of the law, making the situation serious.
Regarding the removal of problematic individuals and the appointment of new personnel, Mr. Worasit expressed expectations for improvement. He recognized the current chaos in Phuket and conveyed confidence in the new team's ability to bring about positive change. He also mentioned that there is no set timeframe for results, emphasizing the urgency of the matter and indicating the involvement of both the executive and legislative branches in the investigation.
Addressing concerns about government officials' alleged involvement with influential figures, Mr. Worasit affirmed that anyone proven to be involved must face the consequences. He highlighted that allowing such individuals to remain in the area would enable the continuation of unlawful activities and reiterated the Prime Minister's firm stance that government officials must be held accountable if implicated.
