Bangkok: This morning, PM 2.5 dust levels in Bangkok exceeded the health standard at the orange level, affecting 54 areas across the city. Residents are advised to wear protective masks when outdoors to mitigate health risks.

According to Thai News Agency, the Bangkok Air Quality Information Center reported that the PM 2.5 dust particles, which are no more than 2.5 microns in diameter, were measured at an average of 31-52.2 micrograms per cubic meter at various air quality monitoring stations as of 7:00 AM on November 13, 2024. These levels surpass the standard threshold of 37.5 µg/m3, marking the beginning of health impacts. Notable areas with high particulate matter include Nong Khaem District near the police station on Ma Charoen Road with a reading of 52.2 µg/m3, and Bang Na District in front of Big C Bang Na Department Store with a reading of 52.0 µg/m3.

The report highlights health recommendations for both the general public and high-risk groups. People are encouraged to use PM 2.5 masks outdoors, lim
it time spent on strenuous activities, and watch for symptoms like coughing and eye irritation. High-risk individuals should avoid outdoor exertion and follow medical advice rigorously.

Meteorological forecasts indicate poor to weak ventilation from November 13-20, 2024, with partly cloudy conditions and morning fog likely contributing to increased dust concentrations. However, satellite data from NASA showed no abnormal hotspots in Bangkok, suggesting the dust is not originating from local high-temperature events.

In response to the situation, the Environment Office has coordinated with agencies to enhance dust control measures. The public is urged to adopt behaviors that reduce dust generation, such as regular cleaning, refraining from burning activities, planting trees, using public transport, and ensuring vehicle emissions remain within standards.
