Bangkok: Police are expanding their investigation to determine if any Thais are involved in scams operated by a Chinese gang using artificial intelligence. Initial findings suggest all identified victims are Chinese nationals residing in China.
According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Maj. Gen. Theeradej Thamsuthee, Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, provided insights into the progress of the investigation following the arrest of the Chinese scammer gang in central Bangkok. The suspects were caught while their computers were still running, and they had not yet deleted crucial data, enabling the police to seize complete evidence.
The scammers exploited financial information sourced from social media, using AI to manipulate images of victims’ faces to create mule accounts and defraud them. This incident, which took place at a finance office, is noted as the first case where AI technology has been utilized to deceive victims, marking a significant development in criminal activities.
The current investigation continues to explore the possibility of Thai victims. Authorities have urged any Thais who suspect they have been swindled by this group to come forward with information. The main operations of the suspects are believed to be located in a neighboring country, highlighting the cross-border nature of the criminal enterprise.
