Pollution Crisis in Sathing Mo Canal Sparks Urgent Investigation

Songkhla: Authorities are urgently investigating the cause of the polluted water in the Sathing Mo canal, which has resulted in widespread fish deaths.

According to Thai News Agency, villagers in Sathing Mo Canal, Songkhla province, are complaining about the polluted and foul-smelling water, which has killed all the protected fish. They are demanding that relevant agencies urgently investigate the cause, resolve the problem, and mitigate the impact on the community and local residents.

The Khlong Sathing Mo canal, located in Moo 1, Ram Daeng Subdistrict, Singhanakhon District, Songkhla Province, connects to Songkhla Lake. In the past, local residents have conserved and restored the canal, bringing it back to its former glory. However, today the water in the canal is found to be polluted, dark in color, and foul-smelling along its entire 10-kilometer length, causing a large number of protected fish to die.

The Khlong Sathing Mo Ban Nong Do conservation network reported that these polluted water masses are flowing from the upper reaches of the canal in Tambon Thamnop. Along the way, this mass of water causes fish to die and the water to change color, eventually reaching the downstream areas. This problem has persisted for a week, but despite officials investigating, the cause remains unknown. They also noted that areas where the canal connects to industrial wastewater often experience similar problems, especially during rainy seasons. They urged responsible agencies to seriously investigate nearby areas, determine the cause, and implement corrective measures to mitigate the impact on the canal, aquatic life, local residents, and the community's traditional way of life.

The Sathing Mo Canal, a vital waterway connecting to Songkhla Lake, is approximately 10 kilometers long and passes through at least two sub-districts. Today, the water is almost entirely polluted, and it remains to be seen whether the canal will recover and return to its former pristine condition.
