Bangkok: The Prime Minister has confirmed the issuance of an emergency decree to borrow 400 billion baht, with the primary aim of assisting the population. He emphasized that this decree should not be compared to other projects in a manner that could lead to conflicts.
According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul chaired a meeting of the National Committee to prepare for the 2026 Annual Meeting of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. The Prime Minister highlighted that hosting this meeting in Bangkok this October is a significant event for Thailand. The meeting is expected to draw 15,000 participants from nearly 200 member countries, including high-level economic and financial policy leaders such as finance ministers and central bank governors, as well as representatives from various financial institutions and executives from the World Bank and the IMF.
The selection of Thailand as the host country for this event is considered a sign of trust in the country's financial and fiscal stability by the international community. It is anticipated that attending leaders will be interested in investing in Thailand, exploring opportunities in finance, securities, capital markets, and the issuance of securities.
In an interview, Mr. Anutin addressed concerns raised by Mr. Korn Chatikavanij, deputy leader of the Democrat Party, regarding the emergency decree for borrowing 400 billion baht potentially undermining fiscal discipline. Mr. Anutin remarked that while the opposition might view it that way, the government is focused on urgently addressing the people's needs. He stressed the importance of collective efforts to improve the economy and advised against making comparisons that could cause conflict.
Additionally, Ms. Supamas Isarabhakdi, Minister attached to the Prime Minister's Office, led a meeting on consumer protection measures to bolster confidence in the purchase and sale of electric vehicles (EVs). The meeting involved EV manufacturers, the Consumer Council, and government representatives. Ms. Supamas stated that the Prime Minister had directed oversight of vehicle sales and services to ensure quality, especially during periods of high demand and associated complaints. The government aims to provide specific assurances to consumers about the quality and safety standards of vehicle components and ensure fairness through compensation and remedies if incidents occur after purchase.
