Bangkok: "Pro Gino," Ms. Atthaya Thitikul, a renowned Thai female golfer, has been awarded the "Public Diplomacy Award 2026" (TPDA2026). The accolade, presented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the Thai Foundation, honors individuals who have significantly enhanced Thailand's image on the global stage and strengthened Thai soft power.
According to Thai News Agency, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Thailand Foundation jointly announced the recipients of the 'Thailand's Public Diplomacy Award 2026' (TPDA2026). The award was unanimously given to Ms. Atthaya Thitikul, also known as 'Pro Gino,' for her exceptional achievements and international recognition. Her contributions have elevated Thailand's reputation and inspired young Thais, serving as a model for effective public diplomacy. The announcement was made at a press conference held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, attended by Ms. Jaithai Upakarnnitikaset, Director-General of the Department of Information and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Tharit Charungwat, Secretary-General of the Thailand Foundation. The selection process spanned from April 23 to July 25, 2026, during which deserving individuals, groups, and organizations were nominated.
Ms. Jaithai Upakarnnitikaset emphasized that the award, now in its fifth year, acknowledges those who have significantly contributed to Thailand's positive global reputation. It aims to inspire similar efforts and raise public awareness of the role ordinary citizens can play in advancing Thailand's public diplomacy.
Mr. Tharit Charungwat highlighted the Thai Foundation's decision to honor Pro Gino for her global recognition over nearly a decade. Her achievements extend beyond sports, contributing to Thailand's positive image internationally.
Pro Gino made history at 14 by winning the 2017 Ladies European Thailand Championship, becoming the youngest golfer to do so. She ascended to the top of the Rolex Women's World Golf Rankings at 19 and held the position for 40 weeks. Her career is marked by victories in major tournaments, including the JTBC Classic, Walmart NW Arkansas Championship, and CME Group Tour Championship, among others. Her recent wins include the Honda LPGA Thailand 2026 and the Mizuho Americas Open.
Her accolades include Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year on the Ladies European Tour (LET) in 2021, the Rolex Rookie of the Year in 2022, and the Rolex Player of the Year in 2025. TIME magazine recognized her as an influential figure in global sports, featuring her in TIME100 Next 2025 and TIME100 Sports 2026.
