Professor Dr. Kriengsak Addresses the Role of Constitution in Thai Politics

Bangkok: Professor Dr. Kriengsak Chareonwongsak, a Senior Academic at Harvard University and President of the National Building Institute, recently discussed the significance of the Constitution in shaping the future of Thai politics. He emphasized that the Constitution functions as a compass for the nation, guiding the country under essential rules and principles.

According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Kriengsak pointed out that while no constitution is flawless, it is crucial to draft one that minimizes loopholes and effectively serves the nation. He described the Constitution as a “contract for the future” and a “joint agreement of the entire nation,” with the ultimate goal of serving the nation and its people. Thailand’s history of drafting over 20 constitutions, including the 2017 Constitution following the 2014 coup, reflects ongoing challenges in achieving national consensus on governance.

Dr. Kriengsak identified two persistent political cycles undermining Thai politics: cash politics, dominated by wealth and power, and coup politics, characterized by constitutional abrogation and election obstruction. He advocated for a shift towards civic politics, where citizens actively participate in electing suitable candidates. To achieve this, he proposed comprehensive reforms across various dimensions.

Dr. Kriengsak suggested reforms such as a research-based constitution, focusing on major principles, and ensuring quality public participation. He also emphasized the need for value-based reforms, cultivating an ethics-driven constitution, and resolving legal and ethical conflicts peacefully. Furthermore, he called for reforms in the selection processes of independent organizations and leaders to ensure accountability and integrity.

Highlighting the importance of public consciousness, Dr. Kriengsak remarked that the Constitution is merely a tool and cannot alone transform the country. He stressed the need for morality and wisdom among the people to ensure the nation’s prosperity and to overcome long-standing political challenges.
