Bangkok: The Department of Rail Transport has announced that rail travel across the nation has surpassed 1.33 million passenger-trips, as travelers make their way home for the New Year's celebrations. According to Thai News Agency, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) reported that passenger numbers on December 29, 2025, were significantly bolstered by the "Gold Line," which saw more than twice the expected ridership due to the New Year's Eve countdown event. In response to the increased travel, enhanced security measures are being implemented to manage the influx safely.
Mr. Pichet Kunathamarak, Director-General of the Department of Rail Transport, provided an overview of the rail travel statistics for December 29, revealing a total of 1,331,351 passenger-trips. This figure was 13.51 percent lower than anticipated. Intercity trains (SRT) recorded 88,259 passenger-trips, surpassing estimates by 3.27%, with the Southern, Northeastern, Northern, Eastern, Mahachai, and Maeklong lines all experiencing varying levels of traffic.
The electric train system registered a total of 1,243,092 passenger-trips, falling short of estimates by 14.50%. Notably, the Gold Line and the Pink Line saw higher-than-expected usage, with the Airport Rail Link (ARL) also slightly surpassing its estimate. The detailed passenger numbers for various lines highlighted both overperformance and underperformance relative to initial projections.
Mr. Pichet also reported four train accidents on December 29, including a fatal collision between a train and a motorcycle. Other incidents involved a parked pickup truck obstructing railway tracks and two collisions with livestock. These incidents caused delays but did not result in significant service disruptions. There were also two malfunctions in the electric train system, both of which were promptly resolved.
Looking ahead to December 30, the last working day of 2025, Mr. Pichet anticipated crowded rail systems in the evening as people travel back to their hometowns or continue their journeys. To accommodate the expected demand, the SRT has scheduled seven additional special trains on various lines.
During a recent site visit to Bangkok Central Station with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Mr. Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, the emphasis was placed on passenger safety amidst the increased travel. Mr. Pichet urged officials and the public to avoid railway crossings and requested local leaders to assist in monitoring high-risk areas. Preparations are underway to ensure safe and smooth travel for the public as they usher in the New Year.
