Sakda Assures Timely Flood Relief Efforts in Hat Yai Amid Challenges

Hat yai: Sakda Wichiensilp, Deputy Minister of the Interior, has assured that the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) will not delay flood relief efforts in Hat Yai, despite challenges posed by rapid waters making some areas inaccessible to flat-bottomed boats. He revealed that discussions with the Songkhla governor indicate a significant recession in water levels, and over 300 large water pumps are being mobilized for immediate assistance. An investigation is also underway concerning the shooting of villagers, rescue workers, and volunteers.

According to Thai News Agency, Sakda stated that yesterday’s relief efforts involved over 1,000 people, with some residents choosing to stay in their homes, receiving rice and water supplies. Conversations with the Songkhla governor today confirmed the receding water levels, and plans to deploy 300 large water pumps, ranging from 20 to 40 inches in size, are being finalized for immediate action once feasible.

The rapid water flow remains the primary obstacle for DDPM’s efforts, as it restricts access for flat-bottomed boats. However, the DDPM has confirmed that rescue operations are proceeding without delay. The extensive area affected includes not just Hat Yai District, but also Satun and Phatthalung provinces, necessitating the transport of equipment from central and northeastern regions.

Sakda emphasized the need for public confidence in the government, noting the establishment of a command center and division of responsibilities into four zones with designated team leaders to ensure efficient operations. He described the coordination among the over 1,000 officials as organized, despite the inherent chaos of the situation.

Additionally, Sakda is investigating incidents where villagers have reportedly fired on rescue workers and volunteers, further complicating the relief efforts.
