Sergio Garcia Announces Return to DP World Tour, Eyes Ryder Cup Spot

Bangkok:Sergio Garcia, the 46-year-old Spanish golf legend and former Masters champion, has announced his official return to the DP World Tour for the 2027 season. Garcia had been participating in LIV Golf since its inaugural tournament in London in June 2022 but has decided not to take part in the new LIV Golf 2.0 structure.

According to Thai News Agency, Garcia has expressed his intention to keep the possibility of returning to the PGA Tour open in the future. His last appearance on the PGA Tour was during the Wells Fargo Championship in May 2022.

Garcia voiced his excitement about returning to the DP World Tour, a tour he regards as crucial to his career. He also shared his aspirations of participating in the Masters at Augusta, aiming to improve on past performances. Augusta holds significant personal value for him, as he hopes to vie for another Green Jacket.

A key motivation for Garcia's return is his ambition to be part of Team Europe at the 2027 Ryder Cup in Ireland. Despite resigning from the DP World Tour in May 2023, which disqualifies him from holding a captaincy position, he aims to compete for a spot on the team as a player.

The DP World Tour has taken a firm stance against players holding both European and LIV Golf 2.0 titles for the 2027 season. Players opting for LIV 2.0 will forfeit their DP World Tour membership and Ryder Cup eligibility, as European team members must maintain their DP World Tour membership. Garcia remains the all-time leading scorer in Ryder Cup history with 28.5 points from 10 appearances.
