Bangkok: Sihasak Phuangketkaew commenced his duties as the Minister of Foreign Affairs with a focus on the Thai-Cambodian border situation. He is set to address the issue at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) this evening. On his first day, Sihasak encouraged civil servants to make meaningful progress over the next four months, stressing unity and a collaborative approach to resolving the border situation. He criticized Cambodia for internationalizing the issue rather than addressing it bilaterally.
According to Thai News Agency, Sihasak began his tenure by paying respects at the Ministry’s spirit house and meeting with officials, emphasizing the importance of advancing foreign policy and modern diplomacy. He stressed that the resolution of the border issue requires cooperation from both sides to ensure peace and security, highlighting the importance of a sustainable ceasefire and the reduction of military presence at the border.
Sihasak acknowledged the challenge of resolving the border issue within four months but expressed hope for progress and increased momentum. He emphasized the need for sincerity from Cambodia and stated that Thailand is committed to a peaceful resolution. He also pointed out the importance of addressing illegal activities at the border as part of the broader security strategy.
As he prepares for his departure to the UNGA, Sihasak aims to position Thailand prominently in international discussions, addressing both immediate and far-reaching global security issues. He noted that the Thai delegation will demonstrate its stance on the border issue and engage with key international figures, including the UN Secretary-General and the Japanese and Russian Foreign Ministers.
Sihasak also addressed the complexities of the border situation, referencing past statements and the need for clear demarcation to prevent future disputes. He reiterated the importance of diplomacy and collaboration with superpowers like the United States and China, advocating for a principled stance that prioritizes Thailand’s interests without taking sides.
