Singapore’s Prime Minister Removes Opposition Leader Pritam Singh After Perjury Conviction

Singapore: Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has dismissed Pritam Singh from his position as leader of the opposition. The decision was announced after Singh was found guilty of perjury to parliament, leading to his removal. This unprecedented move marks the first time in Singapore's history that a leader of the opposition has been dismissed under such circumstances.

According to Thai News Agency, the decision followed Parliament's unanimous agreement that Mr. Singh, a member of the Workers' Party, was unfit to continue in his position due to actions described as "disgraceful and dishonorable." These actions were related to allegations of lying to Parliament. Prime Minister Wong emphasized that the removal was crucial to uphold the rule of law and maintain the dignity and integrity of Parliament.

The Prime Minister stated in a press release that, given the criminal conviction and the parliamentary opinion, Mr. Singh was disqualified from serving as Leader of the Opposition. His removal from office took immediate effect. Despite the dismissal, it's noted that the position of Leader of the Opposition in Singapore is appointed by the Chief Executive and lacks a specific definition in the constitution or parliamentary rules.

Mr. Singh will continue his duties as a Member of Parliament. The Labour Party has acknowledged the Prime Minister's statement, indicating that they will internally discuss the matter in detail before issuing an official statement.
