Sukhothai: Sukhothai residents were delighted to receive the royal fire and royal lanterns bestowed by His Majesty the King, Her Majesty the Queen, and members of the Royal Family at the annual Loy Krathong, Candle Festival, and Fire Festival 2025. Meanwhile, Bangkok is working to collect krathongs, anticipating a decrease in krathongs this year.
According to Thai News Agency, last night in Sukhothai Province was the final night of the annual Loy Krathong, Candle Festival, and Fireworks Festival in Sukhothai Province for 2025. The Sukhothai Governor presided over the ceremony to float the royal lanterns bestowed by His Majesty the King, Her Majesty Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana, and 11 members of the Royal Family for the first time at Sa Tapang Takuan Pond, Wat Sa Si, Sukhothai Historical Park, the venue of the event, amidst the joy and gratitude of the people and tourists who came to visit the Loi Krathong festival.
Bangkok is also playing its part in the festival, focusing on the environmental impact of the celebrations. Ms. Lertlak Leela Ruangsaeng, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Bangkok, and her team inspected the work and gave encouragement to officials who were working to collect Krathongs from the Chao Phraya River during the Loi Krathong Festival 2025 so that the Environmental Department can properly dispose of them.
This year’s Loy Krathong celebrations saw fewer krathongs than in previous years. Last year, Bangkok collected over 510,000 krathongs. Furthermore, 98 percent of the krathongs used biodegradable materials, with less than 2 percent being foam. This year’s krathongs were similarly low, with very little foam used. Interestingly, very few nails were used to make the krathongs this year.
