Thai Election Commission Delays Local Polls Due to Flooding

Bangkok: The Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) has postponed the application process for mayors and members of subdistrict administrative organizations (SAOs) in four provinces affected by flooding: Songkhla, Satun, Pattani, and Narathiwat. The ECT cited the adverse weather conditions as the reason for the delay in the registration day for these local elections.

According to Thai News Agency, the Election Commission Office has instructed the Provincial Election Commission Office to work with the Election Directors of SAOs in the impacted areas. The flooding has disrupted the planned schedule for applications for SAO members and candidates, initially set to occur from December 1st to 5th. Consequently, the election date, initially slated for January 11th, 2026, has been postponed.

The election directors in the affected sub-districts are required to announce new election dates for SAO council members and mayors, in line with Section 12 of the Local Council Members or Local Executives Election Act B.E. 2562 (2019) and its amendments. The announcement is scheduled for December 2, 2025, with the new application period running from December 8-12, 2025. The postponement affects the entire application process in the provinces of Songkhla, Satun, Pattani, and Narathiwat.

In light of this, adjustments to the proposed election announcement dates may be considered as necessary. The Provincial Election Commission Office is responsible for reporting any changes to the Election Commission Office.
