Thai Poker Association Addresses Concerns Over “Thailand Open” Event in Taipei

Taipei:Bangkok The Thai Poker Association (TPSA) has clarified its non-involvement in the THAILAND OPEN POKER CHAMPIONSHIP 2026 set to occur in Chinese Taipei. The association urged the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) to establish a precedent, expressing concern about the potential repercussions on the entire poker industry.

According to Thai News Agency, Thana Chulaphanasak, President of the Thai Poker Sports Association (TPSA), addressed a misunderstanding within the Thai poker community regarding the organization's supposed role in the event. The confusion arose as the name TPA, akin to TPSA, appeared as a co-organizer, leading to numerous inquiries. Thana confirmed that TPSA is not involved in the tournament and emphasized that the association's role is confined to supporting activities within its scope as poker in Thailand is still in its developmental phase.

Thana highlighted concerns regarding the use of the name "THAILAND OPEN" for competitions held abroad and the inclusion of the Thai national flag on athletes' uniforms, which require investigation for appropriateness and adherence to regulations. He underscored the need for clarity in terminology used for athletes participating in international competitions to prevent misunderstandings.

Additionally, the use of a trophy linked to a former SAT governor, labeled the "SAT Governor's Cup" in promotional materials, was questioned for its legitimacy and permission regarding the use of the title associated with a government agency. Thana reiterated TPSA's intention not to interfere with other organizations but to ensure that all parties recognize the potential impact on the sport if an organization's status is unclear.

Thana also mentioned the potential for poker to evolve into a recognized sport requiring cognitive skills and stressed that a proper competition system in Thailand could offer local players opportunities to compete, gain recognition, and improve their skills domestically. He emphasized the importance of clear guidelines by the Sports Authority of Thailand to oversee permissible activities and facilitate the sport's growth in the future.
