Bangkok: Thailand is making significant strides in tapping the Chinese market, as the first government-to-government (G to G) deal for 40,000 tons of white rice is set to begin shipping this February. Thai Commerce Minister Supachie Suthamphan announced the breakthrough after successful negotiations with the People's Republic of China, marking a pivotal moment in Thai-Chinese trade relations. This shipment is scheduled for delivery in February 2026, focusing on 5% white rice, which remains a key interest for China. Discussions with the Chinese Prime Minister and Ambassador to Thailand have further solidified China's commitment to purchasing additional Thai rice, with a target of 500,000 tons by 2026.
According to Thai News Agency, the Ministry of Commerce has directed the Department of International Trade to accelerate negotiations to extend G to G contracts. This initiative aims to accommodate the upcoming second rice harvest and stabilize domestic rice prices. In pursuit of expanding its market reach, the department is eyeing both existing and new high-potential markets, including premium rice markets in Germany, Switzerland, and the United States. Additionally, there is a push to promote white and parboiled rice in Asian and African markets, thereby enhancing confidence in Thai rice standards and increasing the global trade share.
Regarding Thai rice exports in 2025, the nation experienced a successful year with a volume of 7,899,987 tons, valued at over 148 billion baht, surpassing the target of 7.5 million tons. The Ministry of Commerce has set a goal of exporting 7 million tons for 2026. In January alone, Thailand exported over 530,000 tons, valued at nearly 10 billion baht. Key factors contributing to this achievement include the competitiveness of Thai rice prices in the global market and the critical need for exchange rate stability.
