Bangkok: Thailand is moving forward in fortifying its relations with Oman, paving the way for smoother maritime passages through the strategic Strait of Hormuz. This development marks a significant step in diplomatic efforts and is seen as a proactive move by Thailand to bolster international cooperation.
According to Thai News Agency, Thailand has become one of the first nations to officially strengthen ties with Oman, a move highlighted by the successful passage of a Siam Cement Public Company Limited ship through the Strait of Hormuz. This reflects Thailand's strategic diplomatic policy, especially in enhancing its relationship with Oman, a pivotal player in Middle Eastern geopolitics.
Associate Professor Dulyapak Precharatch, President of the Association for Regional Studies and a lecturer in Southeast Asian Studies at Thammasat University, emphasized Oman's role as a neutral nation. He noted that Oman's strong relations with Iran position it as a potential mediator in regional negotiations, which is crucial for maintaining safety in the shipping lanes of the Strait of Hormuz.
Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strategically focused on Oman, which has allowed Thailand to establish diplomatic ties and seize opportunities before other nations. The personal involvement of Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs in negotiations has further strengthened the credibility of these diplomatic efforts on a policy level.
Associate Professor Dulyapak also highlighted the significant role played by Omani leaders, particularly the monarchy, in ensuring the safety of Thai vessels navigating risky areas. Oman's request for an additional list of Thai ships underscores the increased level of bilateral cooperation.
Despite these positive developments, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains complex due to the geopolitical influences of both Iran and the United States, necessitating ongoing vigilance. The strengthening of ties with Oman is regarded as a strategic advantage for Thailand, enhancing the nation's energy and transportation security during these uncertain times.
