Three Reasons Behind Air Travel Liquid Restrictions Explained

Bangkok:Air travelers often question why they cannot bring bottled water through security checkpoints while traveling by plane. This restriction, which limits liquids to 100 milliliters, is a universal aviation security measure.

According to Thai News Agency, the restriction stems from a thwarted terrorist plot in 2006, known as Operation Overt. UK and US security agencies discovered a plan to use liquid bombs disguised in water and soda bottles for attacks on multiple transatlantic flights. In response, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) implemented global rules limiting liquids in carry-on luggage.

Another reason is the limitation of X-ray machines at security checkpoints. Standard X-ray scanners cannot reliably differentiate between safe liquids and hazardous substances without causing significant travel delays. Therefore, ICAO set a standard limiting the amount of liquid per container.

Finally, the controlled environment of airport shops ensures that bottled water sold near gates is safe. Goods in these shops undergo thorough security checks, ensuring they are free of contaminants or tampering. This level of security is not feasible for personal items brought by passengers.

These measures are in place to ensure the safety of all passengers and prevent potential security threats.
