To Lam Sets Ambitious 10% Annual Economic Growth Target for Vietnam

Hanoi: Vietnam's Communist Party General Secretary To Lam delivered a speech at the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party on Tuesday, vowing to boost the country's economic growth to more than 10 percent annually for the remainder of the decade, despite the challenges of the global economy.

According to Thai News Agency, in a 40-minute speech to nearly 1,600 party delegates, To Lam acknowledged that the summit was taking place amidst complex challenges, including natural disasters, pandemics, security risks, fierce strategic competition, and disruptions to global energy and food supply chains.

Furthermore, the 68-year-old leader stated that Vietnam needs to reduce bureaucratic bureaucracy, expand global trade to protect national interests, and reaffirmed its commitment to continuing the fight against corruption. He also emphasized the need to develop infrastructure to address climate change and build strong regional and global connectivity.

The party document presented to the assembly set an economic growth target of "no less than 10 percent per year" until 2030, a figure higher than the previous target of 6.5-7.0 percent achieved in the first half of the decade.

The party's five-yearly plenary session began on Monday in Hanoi, with key agendas including the selection of the "General Secretary of the Communist Party," the most powerful position in the country, and setting the direction for the economy until 2030.

Mr. To Lam, who has a background as a former head of the state security agency, is trying to retain his position as party secretary-general and may also assume the presidency. He has emphasized the need for serious public sector reforms after initiating the largest overhaul of the state system in decades during his short tenure as party leader.
